Founded in 1847 in Copenhagen, Denmark, by J.C. Jacobsen, Carlsberg began with a passion for quality brewing and scientific innovation. Jacobsen named the brewery after his son, Carl, and the hill (or “bjerg” in Danish) where the brewery was established.
Before founding Carlsberg, Jacobsen brewed beer in his own cellar. He later traveled to Bavaria to study advanced brewing techniques and returned to Denmark with carefully transported yeast, laying the foundation for Carlsberg’s commitment to quality and innovation.
Built on a hill, built on science
The original brewery was built on a hill outside Copenhagen, where the cool environment provided ideal conditions for lager production. From the beginning, Jacobsen believed in combining traditional brewing craftsmanship with science. His commitment to research and his willingness to share brewing knowledge helped establish Carlsberg as a pioneer in the brewing industry.
In 1882, a disagreement between J.C. Jacobsen and his son Carl led Carl to establish his own brewery, Ny Carlsberg (New Carlsberg). Both breweries continued to develop innovative brewing techniques and contribute to brewing science. Carlsberg’s scientific legacy includes important research conducted at the Carlsberg Laboratory, including pioneering work that contributed to the development of the pH scale.
The Carlsberg Foundation
J.C. Jacobsen also established the Carlsberg Foundation, which remains a major shareholder of the Carlsberg Group and continues to support scientific research, education, culture, and other philanthropic initiatives.
Today, Carlsberg is recognized worldwide for its heritage, quality, innovation, and contribution to both brewing and science.
