Created by Tim and Marcia Mondavi, it offers a distinctive expression of the estate’s high-elevation volcanic terroir.
Originally conceived as an ongoing vineyard study, Novicium, derived from the Latin concept of a novitiate or beginning, explores the character and evolution of the Sage Mountain Vineyard through a more approachable yet equally compelling expression.
Estate and terroir
Sourced from vineyards at 1,300 to 1,600 feet above the Napa Valley, the wine reflects the rocky, iron-rich volcanic soils and cool mountain environment of Pritchard Hill. These conditions encourage naturally low yields and concentrated fruit while preserving freshness and balance.
Wine profile
The nose opens with black raspberry, blackberry and wild blueberry, followed by layers of mountain sage, bay leaf, pencil shavings, tapenade and delicate floral notes.
On the palate, Novicium is plush and generous, with fine-grained, velvety tannins and lively acidity. A subtle combination of spice, dark fruit and volcanic minerality carries through to a long, elegant finish.
An expressive mountain wine with refinement, freshness and character.
